[Artisan Interview] Coffee in Progress — Wei-Jin Yen: A Champion Is Not a Finished Product, but an Ongoing Process of Evolution
Coffee holds different meanings for different people. For Wei-Jin Yen, founder of Coffeeing, coffee is an endless journey. In this edition of the Coffee Boom Boom Boom WRL, Yen stood out with bold strategy and steady technique, ultimately claiming the championship title.
Brand Story: From Latte Art Passion to Founding a Brand — Making Coffee a Medium of Joy
Yen has been in the coffee industry for nine years. He was first drawn to the art of latte design, and after mastering solid latte art skills, he didn’t stop there. Instead, he continued to dive deeper into the world of specialty coffee.
In 2026, in pursuit of his ideal flavor profile, he founded his personal brand, Coffeeing.
Brand Philosophy: People-Centered, Pursuing Great Flavor for Everyone
In Yen’s perspective, people are an essential part of the coffee industry—whether through personal influence or human connection.
Product Strengths:
The brand’s coffee lineup balances everyday comfort and excitement, offering both “easy-to-enjoy daily coffees” and unique varieties or processing methods that bring a sense of discovery.
Roasting Philosophy:
He pursues what he calls “approachable professionalism,” aiming to make it possible for every consumer to brew coffee at home that reflects its ideal flavor.
Championship Story: Unexpected Shock and a Bold “Batch-Blending” Strategy
When asked about the moment he won, Yen’s response was surprisingly candid:
Q: How did you feel when you won the championship?
Wei-Jin Yen: “This was my second time participating in Coffee Boom Boom Boom. Honestly, when I won, my first reaction was more ‘shock’ than anything. I never expected to become the champion.”
Q: How did you prepare for this competition? What was the key to standing out?
Wei-Jin Yen:
“During the first few trial roasts, I noticed this green coffee had a beautiful floral aroma, but the sweetness lacked sufficient support. To create better balance between acidity and sweetness, and to enhance complexity, I decided to use a ‘batch-blending’ approach—combining coffees roasted to different development levels for submission.
Besides a bit of luck, I think this bold attempt was the key to standing out.”
“I enjoy bringing people together through coffee and allowing everyone to experience happiness,” Yen shared.
The brand name Coffeeing reflects this philosophy: coffee is not a finished result, but an ongoing process—something constantly evolving and being explored.
Advice from a Champion: Build a Framework and Stay Grounded Yet Open-Minded
As a champion, Yen offers clear advice to beginners and fellow roasters:
For beginners:
Find a mentor you trust and whose style you admire. Establish your own “roasting framework” early so that each practice session becomes meaningful.
Traits for success:
Treat every coffee seriously and approach every roast with初心 (original intention). Maintain a mindset that is calm yet willing to adapt and evolve.
For competitors:
Stay open to different perspectives, and never forget why you fell in love with coffee in the first place.
Future Goals: Building a Signature Roasting Brand in Kaohsiung
Looking ahead, Yen has a clear vision. He will continue refining his skills, with the goal of making Coffeeing a representative roasting brand in Kaohsiung.
He also looks forward to taking on more diverse roasting challenges in future competitions.
